When you assess Motorcoach travel companies for your next tour or excursion, there are crucial considerations not as apparent as luxurious seating, internet access, and cleanliness. These fall into the safety category, demanding priority focus for your benefit and those of your group.

Here are only some of the vehicle items The Department Of Transportation’s (DOT) Safety Ratings measure:

  • Brake systems (antilock, breakaway & emergency, tubing & hosing, warning devices)
  • Cab doors ( operable & secure)
  • Cargo Securement (minimum strength, cargo movement prevention, and prevention of leaking, spilling, & blowing.)
  • Emergency equipment (fire extinguishers, spare fuses, warning devices for stopped vehicles)
  • Exhaust systems (multiple technical requirements relating to being fixed in place to combustion & emissions)
  • Frame or Chassis (not cracked, loose, sagging, or broken in any way. Meets welding requirements in all respects.)
  • Fuel systems (numerous technical specifications to maximize safety)
  • OTHER VEHICLE SAFETY COVERAGE INCLUDES: Lighting devices & reflectors – Rear-end Protection – Seat Belts – Steering wheel systems – Suspension systems – Tires & Wheels –  Windshield condition.
  • The DOT Safety Ratings on vehicle drivers is equally extensive. It covers:
  • Hiring qualified drivers (license, testing, record, experience, etc.,)
  • Driver records and qualification records (medical examiner’s certificates, drug & alcohol tests, violations, etc.)
  • Aside from the above, the company’s insurance coverage & premium for each bus takes the DOT ratings into account.
